Direct-seeded rice can cut water and labour — with weeds as the catch

Instead of raising a nursery and transplanting seedlings into puddled, flooded fields, direct-seeded rice sows seed straight into the field. Research from Indian and international rice institutes consistently finds large savings in irrigation water and in the labour that transplanting demands, with yields comparable to transplanted rice when the crop is managed well. The consistent catch is weeds: without standing water suppressing them, weed pressure rises sharply, and trials where DSR underperforms usually trace back to weed control rather than to the sowing method itself.

Why it matters

In a rice state like Chhattisgarh, water and transplanting labour are two of the largest costs in the season. This is one of the few changes that reduces both at once — but only if you have a weed plan before you sow.

Land left empty after the rice harvest can grow a second pulse crop

Across eastern and central India, a very large area of rice land sits empty after the Kharif harvest because there is no irrigation for a full Rabi crop. Research on rice-fallow systems shows that short-duration pulses such as chickpea, lentil and lathyrus can often be established on the residual moisture left in the soil, using relaxed or zero tillage and sowing immediately after harvest. Yields are modest compared with a fully irrigated crop, but the comparison that matters is against an empty field.

Most fertiliser decisions are made by habit, and it costs money

Soil science research in India repeatedly finds the same pattern: nitrogen is over-applied while potassium, sulphur, zinc and boron are under-applied, because farmers follow a familiar dose rather than a test. Applying nitrogen beyond what the crop can use does not raise yield — the surplus is lost to the air and to groundwater — while the nutrient that is actually limiting the crop goes unaddressed. Trials using soil-test-based recommendations commonly report equal or better yields at lower total fertiliser cost.

This is a rare case where spending less and yielding more are the same decision. Government soil testing is free through the Soil Health Card scheme, which makes the test itself cost nothing but the time to arrange it.

Spraying on a calendar wastes pesticide and breeds resistance

Integrated Pest Management means acting on what is actually in the field rather than on a fixed spray schedule: scouting the crop, identifying the pest, and treating only once it crosses an economic threshold — the point at which the damage exceeds the cost of control. Research consistently finds IPM reduces the number of sprays without increasing crop loss. Routine calendar spraying also kills the natural predators that were suppressing the pest for free, and accelerates the resistance that makes the chemical stop working.

Short-duration varieties are a drought strategy, not just an early harvest

Breeding programmes at Indian and international rice institutes have released varieties that mature in noticeably fewer days than traditional long-duration types, and separately, varieties bred to tolerate drought or submergence. A shorter duration crop escapes late-season dry spells simply by finishing before they arrive, and it frees the field earlier for a second crop. The trade-off is usually a somewhat lower ceiling yield in a good year — which is the point of the strategy: it protects the bad year rather than maximising the best one.

A significant share of what is grown is lost after it is harvested

Studies of post-harvest loss in India find meaningful losses occurring between harvest and sale — during threshing, drying, storage, transport and handling — with the losses heaviest for fruits and vegetables and lower but still material for cereals. The causes are unglamorous and largely solvable: grain stored above safe moisture content, storage that lets in rodents and insects, and produce handled roughly or left in the sun before it reaches the buyer.

Millets need less water and less input — the constraint is the buyer

Research on nutri-cereals — ragi, kodo, kutki, jowar, bajra — consistently shows they need far less water than rice, tolerate poorer soils, and require fewer purchased inputs, while carrying higher fibre and mineral content than polished rice. Chhattisgarh already grows several of these traditionally. The realistic limitation reported in the literature is not agronomic but commercial: the crop grows, and then the farmer struggles to find a buyer paying a price that reflects its advantages.

Drip irrigation is measured per litre of water, not per acre

Field research on drip and sprinkler systems reports substantial reductions in water applied compared with flood irrigation, with yields maintained or improved, because water is delivered to the root zone rather than across the whole soil surface. Delivering soluble fertiliser through the same lines — fertigation — typically improves nutrient uptake as well. The findings are strongest for row crops, vegetables and orchards, and weakest for closely spaced flooded crops where the system fits the crop less naturally.

Burning crop residue destroys the fertiliser you already own

Research on residue management shows that straw left on or incorporated into the field returns organic carbon, nitrogen, potassium and sulphur to the soil, improves water retention, and moderates soil temperature. Burning it releases those nutrients as smoke and damages the soil biology in the top layer. The practical objection farmers raise — that residue makes the next sowing difficult — is a real one, and is what machinery such as the happy seeder and mulchers exists to solve.

The nutrients in residue are already yours and already on your field. The question is only whether you keep them or burn them, and machinery support for keeping them is available under mechanisation schemes.

Saved seed loses vigour over generations — replacement is a yield decision

Certified and quality-declared seed is tested for germination percentage, genetic purity and freedom from disease. Research on seed replacement rate finds that yields decline measurably as farm-saved seed is reused across generations, through genetic drift, admixture with other varieties, and accumulated seed-borne disease. For self-pollinated crops the decline is slow enough that periodic replacement is usually sufficient; for hybrids, saved seed does not reproduce the hybrid at all and yields fall sharply in the following generation.

Why it matters

The cost of certified seed is small next to a season's total cost, and it is one of the few inputs where the quality difference is invisible at purchase and unmistakable at harvest.
