Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM)
SMAM subsidises the purchase of farm machinery — tractors, power tillers, seed drills, threshers, harvesters and specialised implements — with a higher rate of assistance for small and marginal farmers, women farmers, and SC/ST farmers. Just as importantly, it funds Custom Hiring Centres and Farm Machinery Banks: shared pools of equipment that a village, an FPO or a cooperative operates and rents out. For most farmers the second route matters more than the first, because renting a harvester for three days is a far better decision than buying one you will use for three days a year.
What you get
Part of the cost of approved farm machinery is met by subsidy, and shared Custom Hiring Centres are funded so equipment can be rented rather than bought.
Who can apply
- Individual farmers, with preference and a higher subsidy rate for small and marginal, women, and SC/ST farmers
- Farmer groups, cooperatives, Self Help Groups, FPOs and Panchayats for Custom Hiring Centres and Farm Machinery Banks
- Rural entrepreneurs setting up hiring centres, as permitted by the state
How to apply
Register and apply on the state agricultural machinery portal. In Chhattisgarh, applications route through the state agriculture department; your block Krishi Vigyan Kendra or agriculture officer can confirm the current window.

- Aadhaar
- Land records
- Bank account details
- Caste certificate, where a reserved-category rate is being claimed
- Quotation or invoice for the machine from an approved manufacturer
